One Big Wiener!

During our first year of marriage, we were always broke!  The debt David acquired from his divorce coupled with child support and alimony with the addition of Sumalee's pre-existing debts amounted to a really high debt to income ratio.  The top number was significantly higher than the bottom number.  In math terms, this is considered an improper fraction or "top heavy".  In order to maintain our bills and have the required necessities to live, we kept a strict budget.  We got rid of cable television, our house phone, we stopped eating out and we gave up little things such as gum and soda because these things do add up.  We chose to bundle up and snuggle a lot instead of turning on the heater during winter.  We made up a weekly menu so we knew exactly what we needed to buy for the week and we saved a lot of money on gas because David walked or biked to work and Sumalee would sometimes jog or carpool.

We would go to Costco about once or twice a month for groceries.  This was a trip we always looked forward to because it was like going on a date.  We always had a reserve in our piggy bank for Costco dates.  Before we left, we would open up the little piggy by pulling on the cork in its nose and we would count out about $3.30 in change.  Then we would have to think about whether we wanted to eat before or after we shopped.  This usually depends on how hungry we are by the time we get there but most of the time, we like to eat before so we can walk off the food.  By the time we get to the Costco parking, we are full of excitement because we're going on a date.  Then while hunting for a parking spot, our excitement would slightly wane due to the herds of hungry, well-dressed churchgoers just released from the religious requirements of the day, ready to fill up their growling bellies by grazing on all the wonderful samples the store has to offer.  But, as we walk toward the store hand in hand, our excitement returns.  We stand in line at the food court and look up at their menu as if we have a hard time deciding what we are going to order but we already know way before we even get to there.  When the cashier calls for the next person in line, we walk up with a little bounce in our steps and confidently asked for 2 hot dogs.  The cashier would then tell us that it will be $3.26 and David would pull all the change out of his pocket and give her the change we plucked from our piggy.  He/she would then place 2 cups and 2 extremely large phallic-like hot dogs in front of us and we would pick it up with a certain type of care you would use to pick up a newborn baby.  Our next stop, the soda fountain where we would fill up our cups with Mountain Dew, oh the sweet sweet nectar.  Once our cups are filled to the brim, we would head over to the condiment stand. David would dress up his hot dog with mustard, ketchup, relish, and onions while Sumalee would get everything but the relish.  Then we would head over to the seating area and look for the cleanest table we can find.  We would sometimes share our table with a stranger but no on really cares because there's food to be had.  Our conversations usually pertained to our business, our relationship, life, love, happiness, our future, the people sitting around us, but whatever it may be, we are always having a great time.

Today we will be going on a date to Costco, not because we're broke but because we have a lot of memories there, the food is great for the price...and we've earned it but that's another blog post.  We have since upgraded from just hot dogs but that is still our favorite.  Seriously, where else are you going to find a hot dog this size with soda for $1.50?

Valentine's Day 2012

Valentine's Day, a day where people are supposed to celebrate romance and do wonderful loving things for each other.  A day where retail stores receive a spike in the sales of flowers and candy.  A day where couples go out to dine and possibly catch a movie.  A day where you express your undying love to your significant other.  A day where the guy/girl is sure to get some action in the bedroom if the mood is right.

In our opinion, Valentine's Day is one of those days that retailers use to trick consumers into spending lots of money so a significant other can feel loved.  While it seems like we have a negative view on Valentine's Day, we don't.  We just feel that a couple should express romance on a regular basis instead of waiting for that one day out of the year.  However, when one gets caught up in life and when there's too many things going on, it takes a day such as this to slow us down and take some time for each other.  Well, it so happens that we've been looking for an excuse to get away.  The demands of work, baby, work, life, work, projects, business and work (did I mention work?), we haven't had a whole lot of time to spend with each other.  We utilized Valentine's Day as an opportunity to take some time out of our busy life to focus on each other.  David took a day off from work on the 14th and we both kiss the baby and left her in the arms of our sweet mother and started our journey to romance.

We didn't venture far from home but we were far enough not to feel the usual demands in our life.  We purchased a hotel package at the Clearwater Casino which included hotel stay with champagne (we opt for apple cider), a couples massage in their spa, and dinner.  The food was fantastic and the massage was very relaxing.  Did we mention flowers and candy?  Well there was!!  What's V-day without the flowers and candy?  We also spent some money playing the slots and craps.  Of course, our time spent behind closed doors was great too since the mood was right.  Overall, we had a great time and have a greater appreciation for this commercial holiday since our lives have become a lot more involved.  We hope that people would take more than just the 1 day out of the 365 days to celebrate love and romance with their lover.  Hmmm, maybe we'll have date night next week.....

What the New Year May Bring

Hello 2012!! We've been expecting you.

Many people have been dreading the year 2012 because of the belief that the world is going to end.  We do not share this belief although we do feel that this year is going to be full of life changing events for us.  There is a huge possibility that we will be moving this year because Sumalee has to go back to sea duty, however, she has also applied for an officer program so she may get commissioned sometime and we may have to move either way.  We have also been working so hard to pay off our debts and may possibly get them paid off this year.  We also have a huge remodeling project for our house which we will pursue whether we stay or move.  In just 5 months, we will be married for 2 years!!! We can't believe how fast it's been, especially since most people never thought our marriage would ever last this long.  Then maybe later in the year, perhaps we might try to have another baby, who knows.  We also plan on taking a nice vacation in the summer time so we can visit our kids in Kentucky.  It's going to be an exciting year!!

Baby's First Christmas

This Christmas was one of the best we've had so far.  We spent Christmas Eve with our brother Brian and his wife Jamie, Jamie's brother's family, her aunt and uncle and a few guys from Brian's work.  We had a wonderful dinner and then we spent it opening presents.  Summer seem to enjoy playing with wrapping papers and boxes more than anything.  Then on Christmas day, we spent it at Thea's house (she's our honorary mother) and ate a feast, played bowling on her video game console, played a board game, laughed a lot and had an awesome time.  Finally, the day after Christmas, we went shopping at Goodwill and enjoyed their after Christmas sale, .99 cents on all their blue tags and 50% off all color tags.  We spent $30.00 on tons of clothes for the entire family including our mom Suree.  After our shopping trip, we finally opened up our presents in front of the warm fire place.  David bought Sumalee a Keurig coffee maker, she's been eyeing this since it first came out.  Sumalee bought David a set of push up bars and a ton of snacks.  We bought our mom a North Face jacket and she bought us a Professional Series 600 Kitchen Aid mixer.  This thing is a beast!!!  We both had a week off (David had a little more than a week off) for the holiday season and it was so amazing to be able to relax and enjoy our family.  We didn't give Summer a present because she's so young but we did give her lots of quality time with her mom and dad which is worth more than any toy.  In a household where both parents work full time, she doesn't get to see us as often so this week was heaven for all of us.

Turkey Time!

This Thanksgiving, Sumalee had to work so we decided not to do anything.  We just didn't want to go through all the hassle of cooking a bunch of food just for the three of us (Sumalee, David, and Suree).  However, when Sumalee came home that night, she was surprised by a traditional Thanksgiving dinner.  We all got to enjoy a beautiful dinner as a family and Summer got to experience her first Thanksgiving.  Moments like this are priceless and we are thankful that we have such a warm and loving family.  We are thankful for the roof over our heads, jobs that put food on the table, our health and the love we have for each other.

Happy Birthday David!

Dear David,

On this day 31 years ago, you were born and I am so happy that you were because without your existance, I would not be complete.  It is an honor that I get to celebrate this day with you and make you feel like the special person you are.  You mean the world to me and I am so grateful that you are mine.  I love you with all my heart and cannot wait to celebrate many more birthdays with you.

Love,
Sumalee

P.S.
Did you enjoy your stay at the B&B? : )

Engagement Anniversary Year 2

Two years ago, we took a chance on love.  We followed our hearts and made sacrifices so we can be together.  It was one of the easiest yet hardest thing to do.  It was easy because we have never felt this type of love before and knew without a doubt that we were meant to be together.  Hard because being together meant hurting those who are important to us.  It was a struggle between one's heart and conscience but in the end, our hearts won.  So on this day, we thanked each other for taking a chance and for not giving up on each other when things got tough, for staying hopeful when the world was against us and for trusting in our hearts that everything will work out as long as we have each other.

Thank you for changing my life....
Thank you for accepting me for who I am...
Thank you for waking me up...
Thank you for helping me become a better person...
Thank you for believing in me...
Thank you for loving me...
Thank you for taking a chance on me...
